Memorial Day is an American holiday celebrated on the last Monday in May. The holiday honors those who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It's celebrated with parades, ceremonies and family cookouts. But most important is to honor our fallen heroes by visits to cemeteries, where flags and other items are left on graves of those brave men and women killed while protecting our country and our democracy.

My city of Fredericksburg, VA is rich in Civil War history since several major Civil War battles took place here and surrounding counties. Each Memorial Day there is a luminaria ceremony at the National Cemetery. It's a somber but beautiful sight.  Candles are placed on 15,243 graves of soldiers, most from the Civil War.
