MEMORIAL DAY is a much celebrated holiday in my city, Fredericksburg, Virginia. As I write this, the world is battling a war against the Coronavirus so this Memorial Day won't be celebrated as much as past ones. Normally on Memorial Day, my city would be busy with out of state visitors exploring the sights of "America's Most Historic City." We are especially rich in Civil War history. Battles were fought here and in surrounding areas.

The assorted bullets and mini balls in photo above, I found in my own yard. It's fascinating to me to know that Civil War soldiers were fighting in my yard over a century ago!

The battle of Fredericksburg was December 11-15, 1862. Thousands of soldiers were killed, wounded or missing. The Fredericksburg National Cemetery is the burial place for 15,243 Union soldiers, only 2,473 are identified. On Memorial Day, flags and luminaries are placed at each tombstone. It's quite a sight as seen above. Click photo for more about the cemetery.

The Fredericksburg Confederate Cemetery, seen above, has 3,353 Confederate soldiers who were killed on four area battlefields buried there. Click photo to read more.
